Binding tape must fit loosely on the trunk, but firm enough so that the tree does not topple over. The point of band tensioners is to be able to loosen the binding of the wood. The tree must have support for the first 3-4 years. During that time the tree grows, the trunk also gets thicker, whereby the binding becomes too tight for the tree.
